frosst books

on saturday, before the weekend madness begun, thanks to my dear freinds at wilkosz and way i found this amazing little bookstore. frosst books. everyday on my way back home i would drive by the old bottle depot in inglewood and i spoted him! a portrait of karl lagerfeld on the wall. amazing. it's even better in person. jeff was nice enough to check it out for me and ask if it was ok for me to stop by and take some photos. unfortunately the wall was not as available as i would have liked it to be, acting as the backdrop to the cash out desk (i would call it register but there is a computer and maybe a debit machine and lots and lots of papers books and alike). the store itself is amazing, i want all the books they sell, even though i probably don't know what half of them are of. they are mainly art books, many, if not all, inspired by modern pop and art culture. i wish i had more questions to ask while we were there but for some reason karl made me nervous :P. if you ever make your way down 9th street do go visit this place. but leave the 'pop life' book alone, it's mine! xoxo

also don't forget about my caitlin power giveaway. two short weeks left before the beautiful jecket has a new home <3. click here for more info.

rag & bone

i saw these new images from the rag & bone spring 2011 campaign on friday. the girls took portraits of themselves for these do-it-yourself ads. doesn't get much more creative than this... or does it? what will they think of next. in any case the feel of these kind of reminds me of juergen teller for marc jacobs, that so many people love, i don't necessarily agree, but here the fact that they are kind of raw like this makes up for all other imperfections.

saturday

to keep this in some coherent chronological order here are the photos from our saturday shoot. kristin from hed kandi is working on launching her new website and in need of new images, we all got together for a creative (please note this credit to jason eng for takign fabulous photos that we all love and admire). alicja brought some adorable kittens and kristin some extensions. can i just say that after the last time trying to take photos with a cat i never thought we would attempt it again, but look at them, the fact they were just around was enough to make everyone's day more pleasant and stress free. i am ashamed to say that i did kind of a poor job styling (bringing 2 bottoms for 4 tops. yikes! definitely wasn't thinking) but the whole idea was more laid back anyways, so i don't think the end product will suffer because of it. the concept was focused around hair (and makeup), in the end we did a ton of loose, fun shots, in fact some of my new favorites are in there (including the screaming polaroid in the first photo). and of course there is nothing like a big plate of cheesy nachos to end the night on a good note.
one more thing before i leave you... she simply MUST come out with a full album. AMAZING!
can you believe this? i am sitting on the street. there is no snow left... that is until 10 minutes from now. early spring is gone again. blah! i am so sick of even considering weather as a conversation topic. instead i will focus all of my attention to the fact that in just a few days i will be heading to new york. it eluded me during christmas time and i thought i was going to have to wait until summer, and we all know how far away that feels. but it is official. i got permission from my boss today and i am planning 3 sweet days there already... ok maybe 2.5 but a mini vacation/anything to do with blogging is enough to put my mood in a whole different place. on top of this i pre-ordered the kate moss by mario testino book that i found is coming out in april as a paperback, at a fraction of the original $500 price. yatta!!! overall a pretty good day if i can say so myself. lots of work shaping up for the weekend. i will update you as the pictures start coming in. xoxo (anarchy street top, la senza bra, zara jeans, vintage cowboy boots)

designer q&a

megan zee and i go way back. now, this is not to say that we are super close friends but somehow our paths inevitably always cross. we first met when she worked at my agency, she got to meet and know a lot of my friends, maybe, in a subconscious (or entirely conscious, depending on who you ask) way, these were her first steps into the fashion world. we both took business at the university of calgary (which, i can neither confirm nor deny, we both loathed) of course i also never missed her on my frequent visits to aritzia, where she worked at the time. we have developed an unspoken respect and love for each other. now she is the founder and owner of her own company, stellar hoods, our paths continue crossing, and more than ever, we both find ourselves in the middle of a frustrating battle to keep the fashion industry in our city growing. at any rate i thought it would be a great opportunity to collaborate on something together. because i write my blog and because she makes perfectly amazing snoods, and we never see the end of winter i thought i'd introduce you to miss megan zee...

q: how did you first come up with the idea for your line?

a: it was actually inspired by a scarf piece that my mom used to wear. the skeleton of the piece was quite similar, i just put a modern twist on it! i first started making them with basic materials and colors trying to keep it casual. this season i’ll be playing with new materials and new colors so you can dress them up or down and wear it with everything in your closet!

q: did you ever think your business would take off the way it did?

a: my only formal training was sewing in grade 8. the rest was pretty much experimenting and self-taught. my first hood scarf that i made was really just me playing around….but i’m glad that it’s turned into what it is today, because i love doing it!

q: how did an education in business help you with developing and running your company?

a: i think business school combined with working in, and managing an established retail store helped me  build the backbone knowledge that holds a business together. it’s not just about making and selling the hoods, but it’s a bunch of puzzle pieces that you put together. i definitely had to do a lot of learning along the way, and i still am! i’m just trying to do the best i can and see where it goes!

q: what are your influences/inspirations for your snoods?

a: i like to turn to runways and magazines. since stellar hoods are accessories, they need to match the rest of the outfits that people will be wearing. i try to base my designs on something that’ll easily fit with upcoming colors and trends.

q: what goes into designing the snoods?

a: i like to test new colours and fabrics each season and see what people like. i really look for feedback. i have a few styles that always do well, so i’ll keep those around because i know people love them, but i like having variation mixed in there too.

q: has your work in retail help with creating the line?

a: definitely. i started working in retail during my early teens,  i really learned how quick fashion changes and how important it is to listen to your customers so you can create pieces that people will like. but it also taught me that style is a very individual perspective and that there is no right or wrong. that’s why i try to create hoods that are very versatile and can be worn with many different outfits no matter what kind of style you have.

q: tell me about the customize option.

a: offering custom hoods is letting people have a say in what their hoods look like. this way, they get a hood that’s perfect for them, and usually one of a kind! generally i just get color requests, but recently i got a request from someone who was allergic to UV-rays. i created a hood that had a detachable front veil that shielded her face from the rays. i’m always open to trying new things. custom requests are also a good place to get new ideas for new colors or design changes!

q: what can we look forward to with stellar hoods?

a: we’ve got tons of exciting things coming up! spring style hoods, artist collaborations and charity partnerships. most current are the new spring hoods that will be available in just a few weeks. we’ve got amazing new neutral yet lush colours and fabrics that will be perfect with all the upcoming spring trends. we didn’t forget about the boys either! find our facebook page for regular updates, contests and giveaways!

nyc better get ready

this is the best news i produced all day. just decided that i will not hold myself back and will definitely not miss out on this opportunity. i paid for my registration for the conference just 10 minutes ago. now to get my flight, accommodation and somehow persuade work that this conference can not go on without me. i feel like there is so much to learn, so many people to meet, so much to do. these opportunities will not fall into my lap by themselves, i have to go and chase them. truly this is not so out of reach, plus it's my birthday soon... ok and the promise of a spectacular gift bag helped a little. so so major!

diy

i saw a pair of earrings in a photo, in a blog post long ago. i couldn't remember which blog it was and google searches brought no results. they were super plain earrings, so i thought probably not very hard to find. it turns out they were harder to find then i thought. so i thought they won't be hard to make, find some chain, some charms and get some pliers to finish the job. after deliberate discussions with the ladies at the bead store i decided that they were not going to be much help, i had to do this on my own. i found all the materials, i had the tools and voila! actually it ended up being so much easier than having to do it from scratch. i found some droopy earrings on sale, took all the links and the rings off, attached my own charm and the job was done. apparently plain sterling silver crosses are really hard to come by these days.

new music 23.1.11

this post is about two months too late. my brother approached me quite some time ago telling me about this artist he read about in the guardian, janelle monae and she's worth checking out. i even bought her cd, which was just kind of ok in my opinion, although the reviews raved about it and what a mix of genres it is. maybe that's what was off for me. i guess to each his own. i did love two of her songs though, tightrope (above) and cold war. i love her style and especially the style of this video, very old school james brown, who i guess she lists as one of her influences. music for me always goes through cycles. i will be so into finding new music and discovering new artists and then i will go through a total dry spell, which i am in right now, although it might be coming to an end. there are a couple other artists whom i have been listening to lately that are sure going to make their own posts in the near future. love it or hate it, here is 'tightrope' for now. xoxo

CAITLIN POWER GIVEAWAY!!!!

it's been a while since my last giveaway, i was planning on posting this one sooner but just got super busy. first of all i want to apologize for the back alley photos again, even though it got much warmer, the snow, or what has now more appropriately turned into mud is covering the streets up to the curb. what i was excited for in the beginning (ie the beauty of a white winter) is now turning into disgusting slush. no matter. here is the beautiful jacket that makes all the woes go away. the amazingly talented caitlin power has offered a piece from her collection to be given away on my blog. 100% silk crepe and leather is my answer to the classic leather jacket. i always say that i love to dress 'hard'. this is the perfect example of chic, modern and rock and roll. drool! i wish i could keep this baby for myself. since i'm hosting the give away, unfortunately i have to sit this one out.

what do you have to do to win?

black swan graphic art

we went to see 'no strings attached' with natalie portman and ashton kutcher yesterday. it was, as i may say so, just my kind of movie, i am a sucker for romantic (and teen) comedies, the girlier the movie the better. in fact i count 'new york minute' as one of my favourites. here i am freaking out about turning 25 but in reality i haven't really grown up at all. judging from my brother's development of maturity, i may just be meant to be a kid forever. anyways, looking at natalie portman in this movie and at how frail and tiny she was it reminded me of black swan. i wasn't the hugest fan, it was neither scary enough for me, nor girlie enough so i was kind of on the fence, plus the whole open ending (did she die, did she not... i think it can be open to interpretation don't you?), i will probably still buy it on dvd, for the costumes anyways (btw did you know rodarte is not getting official credit for the costumes because there weren't a part of some guild or another, of course they have course corrected and now joined, but as the movie is coming closer to possibly receiving an oscar in this category, well i am sure the sisters are not too pleased... read more about it here). i saw these graphic art posters for the movie and i can't stop thinking about them. i am waiting for my own poster from the movie to dry mount and hang on my wall (courtsey of the local theatre), unfortunately it is neither one of these beautiful art deco-esque pieces. i guess better then nothing at any rate.

7th st.

as promised, in light of the recent 'heat wave' we got a little camera happy. i actually have loads of blogging related assignments to do this weekend so i thought i would just kill two (or several) birds with one stone. i actually planned to wear my new boots with this outfit but i lent them to marta for a shoot they are doing up in edmonton, no boots for me, the only other option therefore, were my trusty, and slightly worn to death h&m booties. my steve maddens got scuffed in an unfortunate door closing accident, breaking my heart. i took this opportunity, however, to re-asses the situation and decided it was only sensible to get a new pair, the ones originally bought were too big anyway, plus they got super scuffed *tear* AND bonus! i found a discount code online. did you know that you can google pretty much any coupon code and save a little. i did this with my flight to vancouver and now with these shoes. again! a big proponent of this online shopping business (disclaimer: it's easy for things to get out of control, you always forget what you buy because you don't have your purchases on hand, but things add up real fast). i just realized, in my head i am sounding a little bit like snooki, a temporary lapse of character, since i just finished watching an episode of the jersey shore. how i can sit through it don't know, it's fascinating in some sick way, and actually poetically human, haha i can't believe i'm saying this. a guilty pleasure if you will. i swear to you i will never buy it on dvd. on a brighter note i also bought this, what i am automatically assuming, amazing versace book that i am currently on page 24 of, so far a 'page-turner', contrary to inside sleeve promises, it is not, but educational nevertheless, i'll let you know how the other 295 pages go (excluding the footnotes of course). (h&m shirt and boots, silence&noise skirt, club monaco hat, hermes cuff, aldo rings)

jil sander s/s 2011

just loving these images from the new jil sander spring/summer 2011 campaign. they kind of look like paintings don't they? this spring may have hope yet. (as i'm typing this i realize it sounds really funny to me, what is this 'yet' anyways). have a happy friday. more outfit posts on the way...
